Duran Duran - which Capitol claims is its hottest-selling group since the Beatles - is going to be touring America longer than planned. The British rock congregation is proving so popular on these shores they've already added 10 cities to what was originally scheduled as a 30-city tour. And now they're talking about also playing San Diego, San Francisco and Corpus Christi - if they can fit those towns into their hectic schedule. - The Boston Globe 1984
Duran Duran's lead singer Simon Le Bon -- with girlfriend, model Yasmin Parvaneh -- barks encouragement to his yacht crew at the start of the Round the World race in Portsmouth, England, on Saturday. The rocker, who nearly died when his yacht capsized earlier this year, will join the crew halfway. - Miami Herald 1985
Simon Le Bon, lead singer for the chart-topping pop group Duran Duran, narrowly escaped death when his yacht capsized during a race, trapping him and five members of the crew in the overturned cabin for 40 minutes. ''It was a terrible, frightening experience. But it's not put me off sailing," Le Bon said after he was pulled from his vessel Sunday off the Cornish coast. - San Jose Mercury News 1985

British pop singer Simon Le Bon, 26, he of recent death- defying yachting fame, has married his model girlfriend, Yasmin Parvaneh, 21. The pair are certainly all smiles in this file photo from last August. Legions of loyalists to the Duran Duran heartthrob must be heartbroken. So were the would-be well-wishers -- only a few close friends attended the civil ceremony, held Friday in Oxford, England. - San Jose Mercury News

The band halted its tour Oct. 17 when LeBon was diagnosed with a torn vocal cord. The injury is healing nicely, and the tour will resume Friday in Jacksonville, Fla., spokeswoman Kristine Aston says. The injury forced cancellation of 19 shows, including one at Target Center. The band will try to make up as many of them as possible, Aston said. - The Saint Paul Pioneer Press

O tempora! O mores! New York mag says Duran Duran is negotiating a deal to push three new fingernail-polish colors. Says keyboardist Nick Rhodes: "Makeup for men is always looked at in a strange light. But I look at it as totally pop." - St. Louis Post-Dispatch

D'Arcy of Smashing Pumpkins:
Duran Duran I don't know if I should admit this. I wasn't a groupie or anything - I wanted to be them. John Taylor had the best bass lines. Fucking rock solid, man. He uses some stupid guitars, but he's good. - Rolling Stone RAVES

Duran Duran's bassist, John Taylor, has raised a few eyebrows in London with his outspoken attack on the Boss. "Bruce Springsteen is as popular as he is because he's mediocre," Taylor told a British rock reporter. "No one's going to tell me that Born in the U.S.A. is Stravinsky or Lennon or McCartney. To be popular and get through to millions of people means that you have to be on a fairly low level. Personally I find that frustrating, because I want to do something that will change things, something that's just amazing." People

Why did Duran Duran's Simon Le Bon change the color of his hair last May from blond to black? Because he was tired of "primping and preening," he told London's Daily Mirror. "I feel like a proper bloke now. It was fun for a while, but I'm sick of it. People don't take you seriously when you're blond." People
While Mark McGrath was growing up in Newport Beach, Calif., "there was nothing to suggest the kind of adulation" he now enjoys as lead singer of Sugar Ray, says his mother, software trainer AM McGrath. As Mark himself explains: "I was a break dancer with zits, a skinny body and dyed bangs, thinking I was [Duran Duran bassist] John Taylor. No one except me was feeling it."
