DURAN DURAN'S NEW ALBUM IS SO LAME, IT'S LAUGHABLE
Published: Wednesday, April 5, 1995
* Duran Duran, Thank You, Capitol
One thing you have to credit Duran Duran with is a sense of humor. Thank You is yet another album of covers in a trend that
has long overstayed its welcome, and lead singer Simon LeBon knows it. Thank You is so laughably lame it should win a
Grammy as Best Comedy Recording.
The collection gets off to a frenetic, confused start. Remakes of Grand Master Flash's White Lines and Sly and the Family
Stone's I Wanna Take You Higher are overly busy. And LeBon's attempt at urban rapping on White Lines is forced, despite
vocal contributions from its originator. (At least, however, White Lines is energetic and adequate club fodder. Higher is
simply overdone.)
RECORD REVIEWS
The worst offenders are an inappropriate rap/funk blend on the Temptations' Ball of Confusion and a rap of Public Enemy's
911 Is a Joke. Neither are credible as rap, but what they are sure rhymes with it.
Duran Duran has never been a strong funk band. LeBon's thin voice is better when applied to mid-tempo pop (except for a
bloodless read of the Doors' Crystal Ship). For this reason, a cover of Lou Reed's Perfect Day works fine: It captures the
same breezy, sunny flavor that propelled DD's 1992 comeback hit, Ordinary World, up the charts. Success, a David
Bowie/Iggy Pop tune, is also fun, graced with a galloping drum track. But grafting the distinctive, watery guitar-chord intro
from the terrific Come Undone, DD's last Top 10 hit, onto Bob Dylan's Lay Lady Lay smacks of overkill.
Duran Duran will sign copies of Thank You at 6 p.m. today at Blockbuster Music, 11533 Pines Blvd., Pembroke Pines.
