Nick Rhodes: Duran Duran's funnyman
Teen Magazine, Nov 1984
Nick Rhodes, the
5-foot 9-inch, green-eyed member of Duran Duran, is the one musician in the band who can find humor in almost any
situdation. Sometimes he lets his sarcasm get the best of him, but for the most part, he keeps the band in high spirits. And
with all the records they've sold, the Duran Duran members have lost to be happy about.
But success didn't come easily for them. Nick and John Taylor (who grew up together) formed the band. They went through
several band members before arriving on the winning combination that now makes up this stirring quintet. Nick, determined
not to let go of his dream, knew from the beginning he was going to be a rock star and nothing was going to stop him from
attaining that goal.
Once the band members were finalized, the next step to tackle was the music. Nick has always believed in trying new things,
letting each band member experiment with what he feels works best, and above all, being adventurous. What has worked for
the band is a sound which Nick calls "night music." This simply translates into music you can dance to.
This makes sense for a guy whose favorite thing to do is to go out to a club, dance and have a good time. He recently
married Julie Friedman and you can bet that she's got a lot of personality and a great sense of humor. The couple shares
numerous interests, among them a love for art deco and wildlife.
What else does Nick do in his spare time? Without a doubt, spending money is one of the first things that comes to mind. He
loves clothes, jewelry (a gold chain and a gold ring are two of his favorite pieces), driving around London in his black Aston
Martin DBG MKII and being at home with his black cat, Sebastian. You may have guessed black is one of his favorite
colors, as well as red and white.
Unfortunately, spare time is something Nick has very little of. But, he has so much fun playing with the band, he considers
work a spare time activity. He even loves going on the road. To keep him company, he brings along cassettes of his favorite
rock stars: Talking Heads, David Bowie, Roxy Music and Grace Jones.
Another one of Nick's passions is photography. He has put together a book, "Abstract Polaroids," of his own photographs.
No doubt he has his works on display in the new house he just bought in London.
A much more complex person than his tinted hair and crazy cothes would indicate, Nick's multi-faceted personality seems to
stem from his astrological roots. He was born on June 8, 1962, a Gemini, which might explain why Nick is the way he is.
After all, you know what they say about Gemini males. They're sparkling, witty and above all, a laugh a minute!
